  1. He painted the birds of North America.  See description and examples below.

  2. John James Audubon was a painter of wildlife and nature.  He is most noted for his depictions of birds.  What he did was scientifically noted as many species as he could as well as carefully drew and painted each species.

What is important about his work is the combination of quality and quanitity as well as being the first real inventory of bird species of North America of its kind.  "Birds of America" was published around 1826.  Keep in mind that the Louisiana purchase was in 1803, and Louis and Clark returned from their trip with species of animals never before seen in 1808.   Audubon was tracking and painting birds in a profound and unsettled wilderness, yet unexplored by American pioneers.  People in Europe and the US with taken aback by crazy animals like moose, beavers, rainbow trout and bison.  The variety of animals was impressive to say the least.

Audubon usually illustrated birds for their relative size.  If the the actual bird was 4 inches long, he would illustrate the bird as 4 inches long -- lifesized.  His illustrations are considered by many to be better than photography (it didn't exist in his time) because of the clarity of markings and other important distinguishments  of various species of birds.  His drawings are still used today, and are sometimes used to note the endangerment or extinction of species.

Audubon did paint and note other animals.  He lived all over the midwest and the southern US and is buried in New York.  Audubon is considered by many to be the U.S.'s first naturalist and several organizations are named in his honor.  His original drawings, paintings and early prints are very valuable and highly prized.  Anyone with an intact first printing of his book has something worth millions.

  3. He was a wildlife artist. His most famous series, the one that everyone remembers when they hear his name, was the Birds of America series. Over 400 paintings, done life sized, with the birds placed in their own, natural habitats. He also painted the natural flora, and did it incredibly well. He never romanticized his subjects...he was absolutely true to the colors and forms of whatever he chose to paint.

Take a look here, his work was outstanding!

  4. John James Audubon (1785-1851) was America's dominant wildlife artist for half a century. Googling "Audubon paintings" will bring up more than half-a-million sites, most of them liberally illustrated with his work.

  5. I'm sure that your local library has a book of bird paintings by Audubon.  What a lot of people don't know is that Audubon shot, killed, and stuffed his birds so they'd hold still.
