I can recall one incident of a top Amerindian athlete, though I can't recall his name - Burt Lancaster played him in the movie!

Have people from that ancestry made a name for themselves in the games?

You're thinking of the great Jim Thorpe, who competed in athletics and modern pentathlon, and was stripped of his medals for having played semi-pro baseball, then his medals were posthumously reinstated.

I don't know of any others either.
