  1. The doctorate is another way of saying PhD. Ph = philosopher, D = doctor, so a PhD is a doctor of philosophy, even though PhD's are awarded in sciences and still called PhD's.

A masters is a lower version of a PhD.

I have also heard that PhD means "piled higher, deeper," and there's sometimes something in that, but not always.

  2. A Master's Degree is typically earned after fulfilling at least one year of requirements beyond the bachelor's degree. Many people choose to get a Master's in a particular area of study because it indicates advanced training and coursework, which is helpful when applying for certain jobs.

A Ph.D. is Latin for "Philosophaie Doctor," translated to mean "Doctor of Philosophy" or the highest degree that you can receive from a graduate program. Getting your Ph.D. typically involves at least three years of coursework beyond the bachelor's degree in addition to a dissertation, which is a lengthy thesis based on a student's area of study.

Doctorate & Ph. D are interchangeable terms.

  3. It's higher education.  After earning a bachelor's degree you can keep going to school.    It can take a year or more to earn the Master's degree and longer to get the PhD.  (Doctor of Philosophy  or a doctor's degree in your field of study).

  4. PhD=Doctorate

PhD is a type of doctorate

    Levels basically go:

    Associates

    Bachelors

    Masters

Doctorate/PhD (PhD is used for certain subjects... there are other types of Doctorates)

Insane God Knowledge (Only accessible using cheat codes)

  5. Ph.D = Doctorate ...

I'll just use me for an example.

It took me 4 years to finish my Bachelors.

Another 1-2 years for a Masters

    Another 2-3 years for a Doctorate/Ph.D

For the Ph.D you take 2 years (approx) of classes and then you have to write a dissertation which you can spend a few years on depending on how fast you write it and how slick ya' are.

A Ph.D is primarily only for people who want to be a professor at a University

There are other Doctorate degrees as well that are used professionally, the most common of course is a Juris Doctorate (Law Degree) or a dBA (Doctorate of Business Administration)

    4 years B.S.

    5-6 years Masters

    7-8 years Doctorate
