Can someone explain air rifle shooters' eye wear?

I noticed in the Olympics, many of the air pistol and rifle shooters wear some extremely elaborate optical headgear with lots of lenses and other things hanging from the frame. Can someone familiar with the sport explain how these things work to help the shooter?

  1. The shooter's glasses are designed to prevent distraction and reduce eye strain.  The panels on the side block vision to the side.  The panel in front of the eye not used for aiming is to aid in use of the small peep sight by the aiming eye.  With vision in the non-aiming eye blocked, the shooter does not have to close one eye when aiming with the other eye.  This reduces strain and makes it easier to concentrate on shooting.
