Can someone explain cable modems to me?

My internet is always slow because my older brother is always downloading music, movies and everything. We have a couple computers in the house an the internet is always slow because of him. I have verizon fios and it is usually fast. Would it be possible for me to buy another cable modem and put it in my room? I have a cable jack.

Yes you can have two cable modems in the same house.  You will have to pay for both of them at the same time though.

A better idea might be to have your brother try to limit when he does his downloads.  A simple solution might be to have your brother install a download manager that downloads his files late at night when everyone is asleep, so it does not take up all of the bandwidth when everyone is wanting to use the Internet.
