Question:

Can someone explain how "ITS A WOMAN'S BODY" makes a good argument for abortion rights?

I really don't understand the "woman's body" argument.

Can't you apply that same argument to illegal drugs, public nudity and prostitution?

Why its it ok for the LAW to tell a woman what to do with her body when it comes to DRUGS, PROSTITUTION and NUDITY. But NOT ok when it comes to reproduction?

  1. Look at it this way - you decide you want some strawberries but you live in an apartment.  But there is a city park next door.  So you take your little seed packet and grow several plants under a hedge there.  After tending and caring for the plants for a few months, the plants are just about ready to harvest and you take your little basket to the plant to pick them.

But when you get there, someone else has already picked the berries.  And there ain't nothing you can do about it since they had just as much right to them as you did regardless of who did the work.

Possession is 9/10 of the law - and you gave away your berries without rights.

  2. Abortion is a very touchy subject personally I am not a big fan of it but I think if a female gets an abortion the earlier the better. The reason marijuana and prostitution is illegal and abortion is not is because today in 2008 the government doesn't really care about aborting babies if anything it is better for them economically to abort unborn babies from poor single mothers even if the government pays for the abortion. Soft drugs like marijuana and prostitution are illegal because there is big money in selling pot and s*x. The government hates the idea of a poor person getting fast money so they keep pot and hooking illegal while alcohol, tobacco and abortion are illegal. Welcome to the UHA United Hypocrites of America!!

  3. Good  points.  That logic is inherantly flawed.

EDIT:  I love how Amanda D doesn't answer the question, but instead simply states "it's different and you know it".

Seriously people, don't dodge.  I'd like to see an answer to this one.

EDIT II:  Amanda...So... Abortion has no risk of bodily harm?  I would disagree with that.  Especially considering a life ends in the process.  Also, would you mind further explaining your statement about public nudity.  "Kids don't need to see it" doesn't really consititute a good argument there.  The question then becomes: Why don't kids need to see it?  I won't resort to insulting you though, and wish you would have given me the same respect.

EDIT:  Mike I doubt anyone has a serious answer for you beyond "Who get's pregnant?" or "Reproductive rights are a big deal".

  4. It's a quandary. On one side, the law of the land says that an abortion is woman's right. However, it also forbids that women from smoking marijuana and forces her to wear a seatbelt when she is driving. So much for 'my body, my choice'. To many people, the idea of a woman prostituting herself is abhorrent but an abortion is fine with them. I don't think abortion is a right. The embryo has its own DNA, not the woman's therefore it's a living being with its own body. I support a woman having s*x as much as she wants, if she wants to do drugs it's fine and if she wants to prostitute herself. Because that is her body even though I might disagree with her decisions but an abortion in an assault on a person inside the woman who is growing, has a beating heart, and human DNA. It is the taking of innocent human life and that shouldn't be allowed.

  5. Because, like it or not, reproduction for a woman is a big f***ing deal. If you really thought about what is was like to be a pregnant woman for all of 9 months, pushing a baby out of a tiny hole in your body, and all the future health effects that come with it, you wouldn't even ask this stupid question.

Drugs and public nudity are different and you know it. I don't really have a problem with prostitution as long as it's safe.

EDIT: Ok, "S Class," since apparently you are not a fully competent and rational member of contemporary society, I will explain it all out for you.

Drugs: Serious potential for bodily harm, addiction, and fostering of all the corruption that goes along with drugs. No upside here, for the individual or society. That's why we have a system in place which monitors it.

Public nudity: Not that big of a deal, but people and especially kids really don't need to see it unless they elect to. Again, not a problem of the individual.

  6. We've got so many male experts like you on gws who know so much about women's bodies and still want to control them.

  7. Yes, you can apply the same argument to drugs, public nudity, and prostitution. That is part of the reason why I think none of them should be illegal.

Live and let live. You want to shoot heroin and sell your body for s*x? Go ahead. It doesn't affect me, and you'd probably still do it regardless if it is legal or not.

  8. It's not a good argument, but people will use anything when they're trying to justify murder. Yes, it is her body, but you know what? The one being ripped apart and murdered has it's own body. What about the baby? Doesn't the baby has the same 'my body, my choice' rights? Obviously not because s/he doesnt have a voice to scream for help while being murdered.

  9. Whether you're pro or against, you would have to be a dummy to believe that the rulings which allow women a right to abortion are anything but bad law.

By the way, I am not pro-life.

But Roe V Wade is bad law.

  10. I see your point.......

Women had to fight for so long for the right to make their own decisions and this is one of them.....

I am pro choice....it's not for me but who am I to tell someone else they have no right to do it? And that goes for anything anyone decides for themselves....they have that right....

There are still places where married women have to have a signed consent from her husband to allow her to have a hysterectimy (not even by choice but for medical reasons); and in those same areas most doctors won't consent if you do not have children or if you are single (though it is a medical problem as to why you don't have children...).........

In the same region, men (married men) can go and have a vascectimy done without his wife ever even knowing about it....

I don't think abortion should be a form of birth control by any means...... but at the same time if a woman feels strongly about it and feels she has good reason (and not selfish ones), then whats the problem?

Some people make mistakes, some people make bad decisions that they have to learn from on their own and in their own way.

I am divorced, my ex was extermely abusive in every way....had something had happened and I ended up pregnant with him.....I would have seriously considered abortion.......he was too abusive and wouldn't have wanted a child to suffer the same fate because of poor decisions.....and YES he would have abused the child as well...!

Rape, finances, drug addiction, diseases and std's, violent relationships, I think these are things people should think about before they even think of s*x, but again, no one is perfect and c**p happens.....even terrible things we cannot change or control......

I guess my answer is,...its not really a good argument because it doesnt actually work everywhere for every argument that pertains to a womans body

  11. let's see.........who get's pregnant? stfu. abortion is a legal medical procedure. get over it.

  12. I agree - it is wrong for the government to limit drugs and prostitution.  I would disagree with public nudity because that is a public sight, not an individual matter.  Anything a person wants to do to their own body is pretty much okay with me :-)

  13. I do apply the same argument with regards to illegal drugs, public nudity, and prostitution. That's why I don't think any of the above actions should be illegal. Your body, your choice.

It shouldn't be okay for the law to to tell a woman what to do with her body when it comes to drugs, prostitution, and nudity, as well as reproduction.

  14. NOT A GOOD ARGUEMENT ABORTION IS MURDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
