  1. As you said, a  standard tip for dinner is 15%, unless you feel they did an extraordinary job or a very poor job then it can go either up or down depending.  For your sake lets say you want to tip exactly 15%.  However much your bill is, for example, $80, you would multiply 80x.15.  Just so you know you are multiplying 80 by POINT 15 (.15).

80x.15=12  This works for any percentage that you want to do.  17% would be .17, 20% would be .20 and so on.

Also, you can do it in your head easily.  It's very easy to come up with 10% of any number in your head.  For example, 10% of 80 would be 8.  10% of 50 would be 5.  Even for odd numbers it pretty easy like 10% of $37 would be $3.70%.  Once you get the ten percent just divide that number by 2(for $80 dollars it would be $8/2=$4) then add the two numbers together($8+$4=$12, and 12 is your 15% tip.  Your simply adding your 10% number to your 5% number to get 15% total.

I would also like to say when eating out for dinner if you recieve very good to excellent service please tip 15%-20%.  I am a server and I make $2.13 per hour, which is what every server makes.  Without tips we don't make anything at all.  Plus, you ensure yourself excellent service on your return trip to that restaurant because believe me we tell each other who tips well and who doesn't.  I hope this helps.

  2. If you want 10% just take the 0 off - so $80 would be $8 tip if you want to make it a 20% tip just double it so it would be $16 or 15% would be the 10% answer $8 plus half of that $4 added together = $12

    Good luck

  3. Figuring out a 15% tip on a bill is fairly easy with a few tricks.

    1. Take 10% of your total bill.

    2. Take half of the 10% from step 1 and add the two numbers together.

    Example:

Lets say your bill comes to $27.49

First figure out 10%. This is done by just shifting the decimal place one to the left:

    $27.49 becomes $2.749

Then take half of that number:

Half of $2.749 is about $1.40

Then add the two values together:

    $2.75 + $1.40 = $4.15

    So a 15% tip for a $27.49 bill would be about $4.15

This is a good basis to use and you can give more or less depending on the service.

One thing you can do is if you had good service you can choose to always round up when doing the math as compared to always rounding numbers down for poor service.

    Your Example:

    $80.00 bill

    $8.00 = 10%

    $4.00 = 5%

    $12.00 = 15%

15% would be $12.00 so you could add a dollar in this case to make it more like 17%.

    So your total would be $80.00 + $13.00 = $93.00
