Can someone explain how to pull off a Critical Finish in Soul Calibur 4.?

I know its all the buttons at the same time...and there is even a default button. And i also know you have to wait for the opponents soul gauge to glow red until you can execute it...but i do and my character does nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Once it starts flashing red keep hitting until your opponent flashes pink then prees the left bumper

i was confused when i first started playing. wait for it to flash red. and then you still need to keep attacking (he needs to block, for it to work), and it will make a sound like when an opponent looses armor. he will sort of bend back a little. then if your close enough push the buttons. but you need to do enough damage when he is blocking for him to do a "soul crush" which will then leave him wide open for a critical finish.
