Can someone explain me this quote and explain me what happened?

“When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said, 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.”

It means that missionaries came, claiming to help the people with religion and god, and JUST as soon as the people agreed to read the bible and pray, the missionaries took the land over and all the people had left was the bible.

if that makes any sense.

It means that the missionaries had an agenda.  This means they came saying they wanted to do one thing, but really did another.  They said they wanted to spread christianity but they really wanted to take over, or take the land.
