Can someone explain me what means "antitrust immunity"?

i have heard and found these words several times in some articles and news about the airline industry but i hadn't put attention to it, however i can see that the airlines are looking for that but i don't have any idea what is that so i'd like to know what exactly means "antitrust immunity " and i would also like to know what the airlines do to get that.

    firms with antitrust immunity are permitted under certain conditions to set schedules and sometimes prices for the public benefit.
