Can someone explain summer school to me?

i'm from ireland so excuse my ignorance as here or in the rest of europe nobody goes to school during summer holidays.

but why do some kids go to school in summer in america?and do they get any time off school at all?

oh yes. we get summer. (hey i know a guy from ireland too, funny) but you can take summer classes in the beginning of the season if you didn't pass them during the year. i finished my last week on friday, and my entire grade took summer school so they could take one class, (world history) for 6 weeks and get it over with instead of having to drag through it the entire year. it frees up your schedule during the year for us. but summer school: either to catch up or get ahead, yeah?

people go to summer school cause either they failed a class or they been absent or tardy and stuff.They actually do get time off.

Some kids go to school here so they can make-up the classes that they failed during the school year. Summer school also might offer courses and programs that aren't offered during a normal school year. (When I was in HS, you could only take driver's ed in the summer) Some kids also want to get ahead of their peers by taking courses in the summer so they don't have to take them later.

Usually summer school starts 2-3 weeks after the school year ends and ends 2-3 weeks before the new school year starts. It all depends on the particular school district.

we go to school in the summer to either :

1.) make up a class that we failed

2.) get ahead, and finish up with classes quicker

3.) or it might be a requirement (sometimes... rarely though)

and yes we have time off school.... i had summer sessions this year, which just ended last week, and now i get to spend my summer however i want until the second week of september.

if you do good in your classes (dont fail them) you get the whole summer off:). but if you fail a class say hello to a summer of h**l. (summer school)

students go to summer school for different reasons

some students go to summer school because they failed some classes and the only way for them to go to another grade level is to go to summer school.

like in my school, if you get 4 F's, and let's say your in 7th grade, you will not be able to graduate from that grade level until you go to summer school.

if you dont go to summer school, you will stay in 7th grade until you pass it.

In high school, some students go to summer school to get extra credits.

this summer school is optional.

for example, in HS, you have to take 2 yrs (4 semesters) of P.E.

if you go to summer school and take PE, you will only have to take PE for 1 1/2 yrs (3 semesters)

you will get high school credits if you go to these kinds of summer school.

sometimes, students go to GATE summer school.

these are for students that are in GATE.

you're basically learning new stuff that will prepare you for the next level.

you will not receive HS credits for this summer school
