  1. I like the phrase "gasoline siege" to describe the current situation.  It is very much like a medieval city under siege, with supplies from outside the castle walls becoming scarcer and scarcer.

http://youtube.com/user/peakmoment is a youtube channel I'm fond of, they have done numerous 1/2 hour programs on oil running out and how to get by when it does.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=NSt338hXLHk chapter 112 "Learning From the Collapse of Earlier Societies" may be of particular interest.

The short version is that our entire modern civilization was founded and maintained by sources of energy that were very cheap.  If we had been smart, as a species, we would have used that advantage as a way to build a renewable energy based world by the 1950s.  Had our parents and grandparents all had the vision of a Jules Verne or an HG Wells, they would have, and we'd be living in paradise by now.

Sadly, the earlier generations had no more foresight than chimpanzees, so we are facing the prospect of our cheap energy civilization running out of cheap energy in from 10 to 40 years, depending whom you ask.
