Can someone explain the support cables on a tower crane?

Hey, can someone let me know some more about the support cable on the top of most cranes. Eg. material, what different types are out there etc.

  1. That depends on the load the crane needs to lift. Those cables will vary from 1/2 inch to about 2 inches. The cable is composed of individual strands, woven together, with a fiber core. The core allows the strands to move, such as flattening out as they move over the pulleys. The core also carries the oil needed for lubrication. The cables are usually rated at 1/7th of their real capacity for safety reasons.


  2. its called wire rope.  Cables are for electricity and TV.
