From an article on the "Pieta" marble statue by the Michelangelo:

The statue was commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, who was a representative in Rome. The statue was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century.

  1. This French cardinal, Jean de Billheres, was picked as the Vatican's representative in Rome.  The Vatican then commissioned Michelangelo to make a statue for the cardinal's tomb, and Michelangelo created The Pieta.  But instead of going on the cardinal's tomb, in the 1700s the statue was moved into one of the chapels in St. Peter's Basilica. There are several chapels in St. Peters', but as you enter St. Peter's, this chapel is the first one on the right.
