  1. Karrie,

In simple terms we have 2 options in Michigan thanks to a ruling that took place a LONG time ago (with much heartache and tears for a few HSing families here).

    1) Simply homeschool you child. No reporting, no stating you are homeschooling and no requirements to tell anyone. It's that simple...you just do it as the Nike ads state.

    2) Since some people wanted to have the option to get assistance from the state (special needs kids, participate in some sports, books etc) there is the option to register yourself as a private school and teach under those state guidelines. You'll need to provide regular reports and status updates but would have access to the gov't school "stuff". You are also mostly guaranteed to be free from having someone knock on your door to accuse you of having a truant child.

In GENERAL I suspect that based on the people we know (a few hundred HSers), some 98% in MI are doing it under the first option since most districts do not spend the time to harass you, nor do they have the time.

I hope that helps...in simple terms...

This site has a pretty comprehensive listing of Michigan homeschooling resources. I would advise checking with some of them.

From reading the file you posted, it looks like you have two options for homeschooling - one without any intervention and one with.

  3. Read this link at HSLDA instead:

    That should help.

  4. If you would like me to explain this to you, please feel free to e-mail me off list.  Perhaps you can send me your phone number, and I would be happy to call you as I have unlimited long distance.

  5. This is just the first of MANY questions you will have about homeschooling, so I recommend you find a local homeschool support group and get in touch with the folks there.  They will know what the requirements are for your state and can explain how you can follow them.  They will also be a great resource when it comes time for field trips, park days, co-ops, curriculum, socialization, clubs, sports, ...  Because you will have a LOT more questions, it's good to have someone local you can call on to help you.

  6. I don't think you should homeschool your kids if you don't understand the information.
