Can someone explain to me how to make a legal right turn on a red light? How long to stop for before turning?

Also, am I allowed to creep over the pedestrian crosswalk if I can't see ongoing traffic coming from my left side? Any help to clarify this situation is appreciated.

  1. After signaling, getting in correct lane, etc.

1] stop at the stop line. Be sure it is a complete stop -not a pause or rolling stop [ taught my kids to say "one, Mississippi; two Mississippi'

    three Mississippi." ]

2] then creep up til you have a clear view of any oncoming traffic.

3] be aware the oncoming traffic STILL has right of way [ green light ]  -

don't try 'zooming' out in front of them.

  2. the rules on that can differ from state to state

  3. When your vehicle settles back on it's shock absorbers and is at a complete stop. Then you may advance slowly to a point of clear view as long as you don't interfere with crossing pedestrians. When the way is clear, you may make your turn, but keep a sharp eye for any turning lane that may direct traffic into the lane you plan to occupy.

  4. A stop is considered a complete stop, it can be for any period of time, even a nanosecond.  You aren't supposed to creep over the pedestrian sidewalk, but for safety reasons I get as close to the intersection as I can so I can see what is coming.  Sometimes I pass stop signs and stop right at the plane of the intersection just to be safe.

  5. You would stop for the same amount of time you would with a stop sign (I think ours is a count of three)

Legally, you aren't supposed to creep into the crosswalk - but it's about impossible to see if you don't.  Just do so slowly and watch for walkers.

  6. You must come to a complete stop, but do not need to wait any longer than that. You may enter the crosswalk, but must only do so after stopping and seeing if there are pedestrians.

  7. In the case of a stop sign, come to a COMPLETE stop, even if you don't see cars coming. Your blinker should be on before you even come to a stop. You have to come to a complete stop no matter which way you're going (left, right, or straight). Then, once you see that no traffic is coming and nobody is crossing the road, you can go.

At a red light, use your blinker, stop before the cross walk, then if nobody's crossing the street in front of you, creep up to where you can safely see oncoming traffic. If no cars are coming, you can turn right. At some lights there are signs that say 'no right turn on red', so make sure you don't turn right at a red light then, even if there's no traffic coming.

Also, you always have to let pedestrians cross before you go( at a crosswalk). They have the right of way at a crosswalk.

  8. Red light at a right turn is the same as a STOP sign. You need to come to a complete stop if the way is clear then you proceed.

Yes you are allowed to go over the pedestrian crosswalk after you have come to a complete stop.

  9. 1. You have to come to a complete stop, but if there is no sign saying you can't turn on red, you can make a RIGHT turn only.

    2. No.  If you are stuck at a red light, and a pedestrian comes along, you could get a ticket.
