  1. AA = associates = 2 year degree

    BA = BS = bachelors = 4 year degree

    MA = MS = masters (bachelors and 2 year degree)

    PhD = doctorate = masters and 2-6 years

    You can go straight from high school to the bachelors, you don't need to get an associates first - but you can if you want.

  2. As a very general answer:

    An AA (or AS) is two years of full time college.

    A BA is four.

    A MA is six

    A PhD is at least eight, often more.

    Some fields of study don't have all of these.  For instance, I am studying Traditional Chinese Medicine, and there is no AA or BA--it's MA or nothing.
