Can someone explain to me the process of license and registration of used cars?

I am about to purchase a used car from a private party. What should I expect to receive from them and what steps do each one of us have to take to ensure the legal transfer of the car?

At a minimum, you should expect to get a title, in the name of the person selling the vehicle, and clear, that is, there is no legal owner listed on the title.  They will sign in the seller's part, you will sign the buyer's spot.  In some states this will have to be notarized also.  

You take the signed title to the DMV and transfer it into your name, show them your insurance card and get it registered in your name while you are there.  New title will be mailed to you.
