  1. only if you care about getting the absolute best picture availible for your system. hdmi hands down gives you much better quality audio and video than component or s video.

  2. Put simply, HDMI is a single cable that carries both high definition digital video and multi-channel audio.

    You said keep it simple!

If you want/need more detail see the first link or look on Wikipedia.

You don't have to use it -- in fact under certain conditions (despite what other have said) Component video cables can give better results than HDMI -- but within the next couple of years HDMI will be the only way to connect HD video devices (analog cables will be limited to sub-HD resolution or not work at all).

HDMI, at short distances (under about 10'-15') is the best way to connect up a home theatre system, partly because of simplicity (single cable), but also because it maintains a digital signal (no need for analog to digital or digital to analog conversion).

It is NOT necessary to buy expensive HDMI cables. There are differences, but at short distances a budget cable ($10) will work identically to an expensive cable ($100+). See the 2nd link.

One final point, HDMI itself won't make DVD look better, however, some upconverting DVD players only output HD over HDMI. Your HDTV will also upconvert DVD to fit the resolution of the screen. However, some DVD players do a better job than TVs.

  3. High Definition Mutlimedia Interface. It has become the industry standard for transporting a perfect copy of your audio and video signal between devices such as TVs and surround receivers.

HDMI uses copy protection (HDCP) that makes it nearly impossible to steal a perfect copy of protected media while letting you enjoy a perfect copy on your TV and through your surround system.

If you want the best picture and sound, with the equipment you have, you should use HDMI.

  4. Unless you use an HDMI cable you will never know the difference but there is a major difference. With HDMI everything is put in HD specs. Things will look and sound better. To get true HD quality out of your system you should use HDMI. I would highly recomend hooking it up!!!
