I'm trying out for my schools volleyball team this year and I don't know the first thing about it. Can somebody explain to me the positions and what each position does?

  1. The other guy has probably got the best advice - but go with someone who can explain it as the game goes on.

    Basically:

The match is first team to win 3 Sets. Each Set is the first to 25 points with a 2 point lead. A point is won on each rally (ie you don't have to win service to score a point).

After the serve and any contact made by the oppositions blocker(s), each team is allowed 3 hits to get the ball back ovr the net. Your team will lose a point if the ball lands within your court, lands out of court* where the last touch was by your team, is not returned over the net and between the antennae, or when your team has players out of their correct positions at the time of the serve.   * includes ball hitting walls or roof.

If a ball comes down fast, someone has to get "under" it to dig it up for the SETTER. The setter pushes the ball up so it comes down just near the net where a HITTER/SPIKER can pound the ball hard into the oppositions court.

Since the team plays in a strict rotational order, and rotates whenever it is their turn to serve, all players start each rally standing in particular areas on the court. Specialist players such as Blockers, Setters and Hitters will usually have to start in a position not their most suitable. They will usually run to their preferred spot as soon as the ball is served. This can be confusing for onlookers, as players seem to start in positions facing in all different directions, then run all over the court as soon as the ball is served.

There is another spacialist position called a LIBERO. Space doesn't allow an explanation here, so get a good book.
