  1. Anarcho-syndicalists believe that trade unions should replace government. The idea was popular in Italy after WWI, and spread to Spain, especially among the printers of Barcelona. Whereas in Italy, Mussolini was able to gain the support of anarcho-syndicalists, in Spain they opposed Franco, and they fought against Franco forces in the Spanish Civil War, from 1936 to 1939. In the U.S., the International Workers of the World (IWW), or "Wobblies," as they were called, were strong among the longshoremen of New York, but were actively suppressed by the government for their anti-war opinions.
