Can someone explain what individualism is?

I need to "provide a brief description on the concept of individualism" Ive tried searching online but I just dont get it.. Can someone explain?

  1. It all depends in what context (whether it be that of literature, psychology etc), but I'll give you a brief idea:

    Individualism is the belief that follow your own concepts and ideas is better than following the mainstream way of thinking, in this definition. You follow your own path, regardless of the social acceptance of it. Individualism can best be summed up by the word independence. You think independently of others, you work within your own parameters independently of others.

  4. im pretty sure its something like this so dont blame me if im wrong.....individualism: doing somethin that you agree with as an individual; acting by your own rules  

  5. Do you want the government to do everything for you?  Or do you believe that government should be limited in its power (i.e., not have too many taxes or regulations)?  

    The degree to which individualism exists in a country is the degree to which government is limited in its power.  If you are an individualist you don't believe in government handouts or excessive taxes and regulation.
