Can someone explane neon genesis evangelion to me please?

ok, im about to watch the 26 ep of the tv seiries.

but now i find there is a couple of movies. death and rebirth and the end of eva. what are they about??

and also, i found there is something called Neon Genesis Evangelion retake. what is this about? when do i watch these? can someone explane

The End of Evangelion are the actual last two episodes of the series (verses the "Congradulations!" ending). After Shinji kills Kaworu there is an attack on Nerv by SEELE (I tried not to spoil too much).

Death and Rebirth (the first movie): the first half (Death) is a recap of the series prior to the events of EoE. The second half (Rebirth) is the beginning of EoE.

I think you are talking about "You Are (Not) Alone" which is pretty much a   series of films condensing the Evangelion series from what I've heard.

Death is sort of a recap of the first 24 episodes of the series, and Rebirth is the first half of The End of Evangelion.

RE-TAKE is a doujin by Studio Kimigabuchi that retells Eva after Shinji's encounter with the twelfth Angel, Leliel. It's a manga published by fans of the original series.

Rebuild of Evangelion is Anno Hideaki's new series of films that will retell the entire series AND give it a whole new ending. It will consist of four films, the first of which "Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone" has already been released and fansubbed.

If you search the web you should be able to find some help.  The original ending of the original series was really disliked by the fans and provided no closure.  The movie end of eva I would recommend getting as it does a fair job of wrapping up the insanely convoluted story, but there are still unanswered questions that you're going to have to find through digging around.

I enjoyed the earlier part of the series.  I thought it got far too heavy at the end - all the character's personalities changed and the theme of the show took off into a really weird metaphysical angle.  It's good once through but I ended up selling my set because I just didn't want to watch it again.
