My fiance wants to be a high school history teacher, and is starting out by taking a few classes this semester. He is 24. When he was 19, he got arrested for armed burglary. We saw that our county's school hiring requirements said that if this specific offense was more than ten years ago that he could be hired with a careful review. We'd like to know his chances of being hired, and passing the security clearance for internships for that matter, before he takes all the classes and gets declined at the end of it all. It's been four years, and by the time he needs to do his internships (he's taking one or two classes a semester) it will have been over ten years since it happened. There's a chance, but how good of a chance is it?

  1. You have answered your own question....

Yes, you can take the classes, take the test, and become certified even if you have a record.

However, it is the individual school districts that select and hire teachers, so it is there hiring criteria that you should be concerned with.

Go down and speak with the HR department for the district.

And remember, there are some teaching jobs in prisons and juvey institutions,,,,, where armed burglary may be a assest, since he has turned his life around.
