Question:

Can someone get money from my account without me knowing?

I deposited a check from a person who may be a craigslist scammer into my account. I am selling an expensive item, and I really need the money, but I figured, instead of being stupid, I would just deposit it and wait for it to clear.

I need to know though, if I deposit this check, is there any way for this person to get my money? I mean like, can he come get my money that I have already in the account because I deposited his check?

I am really scared now because I have a lot of money in the bank, and I'm not saying it's definitely a scam, but I just need to know if I am protected?

  1. no the person cannot get into your account to get the money.  HOWEVER, coming from someone who was scammed pretty badly earlier this year from craigslist, you are responsible for everything that gets deposited in your account.  i am not saying that this is going to happen to you, but what happens is that the person pays with either a check or money order and then places a stop payment on the item which in turn overdraws your account and now you are responsible for paying the money back.  i was out $2500.  the bank WILL NOT take responsibility for it, nor are they supposed to.  trust me, been there, done that and it was not fun.......

  2. He shouldn't have ANY access to your account unless you provided it to him.

  3. There is no way that you can get money out of someone's account by giving him a check.

A check is a way for a bank to access the account whose owner wrote the check.

Basically you can get his money via the cheque, he cannot get yours.

However, I did hear of some scammers that paid you with a cheque, the cheque cleared, you gave them the item and their bank would get the money back.

So their money goes back to them.

I am not too sure about this scam and I never double checked it so it could be only words but if you are scared then all you need to do is ask your bank about it.

Mind you, it isn't as if your bank will put up the money themselves if they advice wrong but you have got to trust someone and your own bank is a good bet especially if it is a manager.

I am sorry if I scared you now, lol.

  4. I don't think you need to worry about that. To access your account on-line that person would need alot more information than just you account #.

I'd say the only thing you need to worry about is does his check have coverage.  One way to find out is simply cash his check at his bank.  All you need to do that is simply a drivers license.  The additional advantage is that this way he won't have your account # because you are cashing it at his bank, but if the bank employee writes down your DL # on the back of his check you might have other problems.

The more I think about it the better it sounds you just using your bank.
