Can someone give me a brief history of....?

the 200-meter freestyle olympic swim? I don't need to know like an almanac of the winners or anything, just a "brief history" of it. not sure what that means...but i need it for a math project.

200-meter freestyle/men

The 200-meter free has been a competition again since 1968 (Mexico).

Since 1968 the swimmers have removed 13 seconds (!!).

Roughly a second per Olympics.

In other words Spitz would not have qualify for 2008 in Beijing.

The same for women.

Shirley Babashoff would not have made the final.

I have this theory that over many many generations of 100 meter olympic swimmers mating and having kids, a 200 meter freestyle olympic swimmer evolved, giving birth to a generation of 200 meter freestyle olympic swimmers.
