  1. It's really important to have the right balances of nutrients, and this is a tremendously complex thing.  We got a homemade diet formulation for our dog from the Nutrition Clinic at the UC Davis VMTH (Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital).  You don't actually need to take your pet there -- all you have to do is fax them the forms, which include information that your vet will provide about the cat's medical history.  The diet will be tailored specifically to your cat.  It is $200 for the service, but if you have the means, it's well worth the expense.

I believe they also provide (and I think this service is free) simple nutrition consults, which means they advise you as to what commercial diets are available that would suit your cat.

If you're interested, you can reach them at (530) 752-1387 or visit their website:

    http://www.vmth.ucdavis.edu/vmth/service...

Also, check out the following online resources -- but whatever you do, don't change your cat's diet until you've cleared it with your vet:

    Good luck!

  2. Before making any major changes in your cat's diet, it's a good idea to check with your vet.

    Good Luck!

  3. Making your own food can be difficult. There are nutrients they must get that doesn't come from protiens like fish, chicken, etc.

Best bet is to buy a good canned food. Innova, wellness, felidae, are all good. go to a high end pet store for the best brands. (not Petsmart or Petco).

  4. Stella and Chewy's Fresh From The Farm frozen food is a very high quality raw frozen diet for cats.  They are a family owned company, and only sell their products at privately owned pet feed stores, so you will probably not be able to find it commercially.  The good news, however, is that it can be bought online: http://www.stellaandchewys.com/site/buyo...

The benefits of Stella and Chewy's:

    Each batch is salmonella tested.

It contains enzymes that aid in the cat's digestion.

Enzymes also get into cat's saliva and eat away the bacteria that causes plaque and bad breath, so it's good for the teeth.

It contains only high quality human grade ingredients, and no corn-based fillers or animal byproducts.

    Natural preservatives.

It is nutritionally balanced to meet your cat's dietary needs.

It can be fed as the main diet, or a supplement to dry cat food.

Here is their website for cats:

If you decide to supplement it with dry food, I would suggest Merrick's Before Grain or Eagle Pack's Holistic Select.  Both are relatively high in protein (Before Grain has more, I believe) and contain blueberries, cranberries, and acai berries which are helpful in preventing and controlling Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder.

  5. I personally feed a ground Raw Meat, Bones and Organ based diet to my cats and they are incredibly healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. While scary at first, once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it it's a snap to prepare.

Cats are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!

If you are interested in feeding a raw diet some great places to start learning are http://www.catinfo.org/  , http://www.catnutrition.org/  , and http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/  .

If you would like to try raw with your cats and don’t want to get all technical about it but want to try a trusted, time tested and balanced raw diet you can order from http://www.felinespride.com/products/cat...  . I purchased this myself when I first started and my cats loved it!

Another premade Raw you can try is Natures Varity. I personally have never used this but know many people that do and it’s pretty easy to find http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.la...
