  1. Rio de Janeiro is amazing. Avoid taking public transportation though. I would also avoid flaunting cameras and jewelry. If you take simple precautions you will have a great time. Do visit Santa Teresa, this amazing bohemian district where naive art painters live and sell their work.

  2. Rio is a great place to visit, but be wary of crime. Don't carry valuables with you.

  3. Beware of the monkeys... They have a very bad monkey problem... Plus, there money is very colorful and g*y!!! Be careful... don't get into any unmarked taxis... they'll kidnap you and ask for a ransom....

  4. Aids most definitely

  5. Avoid doing things that don't interest you.  There is so much to do there that you will never have enough time to see everything.

  6. Dont have s*x with the locals. HIV is very high there.

  7. Lots of crime in Rio.  Lots.  The only people there are tourists.  Real Brazilians hang out and party in in Sao Paolo

  8. stay in the tourist areas.

  9. if it dont fit in ur pockets.. then dont take it.

  10. Great question!

I am actually going to be there in less than a week and can't wait to go to the beach, have coconuts, drinks, "salgadinhos" (finger foods), going out at night for a beer and fries at the local bar, street fairs, free concerts at the beach and much more.

Being a native of Rio, I have to say that the city has been able to be 50% great and 50% completely screwed up. From violence just about anywhere to loooooong lines at places like the post office, it seems like nothing works and the system is just broken beyond imagination. On the other hand (the other 50%) people seem to have an incredible ability to continue to have fun, mingle with just about anyone and truly enjoy everything the city has to offer.

Where else in the world can you hike a landmark (Pao de Acucar), go clubbing at the top of a mountain, sunbathe in the company of really good looking people, sample all kinds of cuisine, be surrounded by such musical people and do most of this either for free or at really affordable prices?

Now getting more specific, I would check out the following website:

    http://www.ipanema.com/

At first it seems to be about Ipanema beach only but as you dig through the links you'll see info on just about anything fun and interesting about Rio

I would also HIGHLY recommend the book "Rio for Partiers". It talks about partying just as much as local food, dress code, etc. Beautiful pictures and lot's of great, real, non "sugar coated" info.

Just to clarify, I am not -in any way- involved with the people who did this website and wrote this book. I just know this because I get asked these questions by friends constantly and those who have done some research have told me these are great resources.

Have fun and enjoy your trip!

  11. watch out for the C.V. infact dont go to rio

  12. no donkey shows

  13. Ahhhh Rio Brazil!! Go every year, sometimes twice.  First, never carry large amounts of cash with you, bring one credit card on you and little cash, everything is very affordable so no need to be walking around with large sums of Real(currency in Brazil).

Avoid the Favelas, even the tours (which I find demeaning to Brazilian culture).  These are the poor communities and are gang ridden.  Not the citizens fault, but a defunct govt.

Never carry a lot of things with you , crime is high and if you just act natural and not like a tourist you will be fine- the people are wonderful and have good hearts, just an impoverished country produces crime - I love Brazil and the people-you will too!!

HIV is just as rampant as in the USA and they have a very good SAFE s*x campaign which is more prominent than in the cities of USA-so if you  have s*x just be safe as you would anywhere in the USA or UK- that was very ignorant of CherryToppings(please educate yourself-not meant to be rude we are all ignorant of something, till we are educated on it)- be smart, be safe, be aware in all aspects of your trip.  Enjoy!!!
