Do you mean Durango just south of Mexicali or do you want the State and City Durango.?

If so you have to make your way to Mexicali and head south on Mexico #5 . It is 35 miles south of  there and you can see the signs.

I've done this before. I would go through Nogales AZ. It seems shorter to cross somewhere else, but trust me,it's a nightmare.

If you leave at midnight from Los Angeles so that you can arrive at Nogales at day break. It's about 550 miles of US driving.

It's about 732 miles from Nogales to Mazatlan but it may take 12 hours.

I would recommend spending your first night in Guaymas. I would also recommend a stop in Mazatlan before you head into the mountains. Don't drive in the mountains at night!

Paco gave you good info.   Mapquest does not work for Mexico. I like the site  I have put below. Add a couple of yours as it always takes longer.  it is a good idea to hae a Guia Roji the Mexican road atlas...avail at big book stores and on-line.  And, just to be sure you know...you will need a car permit and Mexican car insurance too.  The 2nd site has info on both.
