Good answers yesterday, but I'm still intrigued by PBS NOVA TV-program called "B-29: Frozen in Time" where Greenamyer tries to rescue 50-year old B-29 'KeeBird' from northern Greenland in the Arctic Circle.

  1. Leaving the heater in the aft compartment-yeesh.  To me it summed up the lack of (engineering) expertise this "salvage crew" was showing.

    Though the engines catching fire wouldn't have been a surprise either-given it was B29 and not a B32 (a re-engined B29 basically).

  2. Rotorhead, et al, it wasn't the lack of runups; it was the Kerosun heater in the aft pressure compartment that tipped over taxiing and started the fire that wasted all that effort.

Trivia Question:  anybody know where Ki Ki Bird (the name of the B-29) came from?  Same song as the Fugawi Tribe.

  3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kee_Bird

  4. I would have thought they would have done more ground run-ups of the engines to look for just this sort of problem. They really screwed the pooch on this.
