my husband is 24 and he never learned to read or write from school he would love to be able to learn as it would open up so many options for him as he is so limited with what jobs he can do he is a clever person but at his school his teachers just gave up on him

  1. Library is a good place to ask, they will point you in the right direction for courses.

He may have something called  dyslexia which causes problems with reading and writing but tests can be done for this nowadays, best of luck to you both.

  2. Go to your local community college and have him tested for learning disabilities. This should be free. They will be able to help you from there.

    All the best to you!

  3. I  would suggest that he registered at the local college and they will be more than happy to help. If you plan to do this I would suggest that you do it sooner rather than later as they will fill up quite quickly with it being summertime.

If he doesn't fancy that a home tutor could be an option, and would probably be more successful because it would work on a one to one basis.

    Best of luck.

  4. Check out opportunities for adult literacy in your area. I used to do this as voluntary work when I was at university - it was immensely rewarding : its nothing like school and nearly everyone I met really did get a benefit from it - and it is needlessly handicapping yourself to not give it a go. Many people came to it when they found their kids were learning and asking them questions. It really is worth going for it.

  5. maybe a course in your area

  6. As much as the local community may be able you I can also understand if he may not feel confident to attend things like this etc.

So if you wanted to personally help a little to boost his confidence enough untill he feels comfortable to join a local group then I would try going back to basics.

Start with simple words, get a not book and put a line down the middle, write a selection of words and ask him to copy and learn these words and then test him on them by folding the half of the page you wrote on over.

It is a good idea to break words down, for example: together, when I was taught this word I will always remember my grandad teaching me to remember is as TO GET HER - Together.

These may all seem like obvious techniques but they do work and I am sure your husband would appreciate the support and help.

    Good luck Hun x

  7. The term to search for in looking for a course is 'adult literacy'.

Yes, see if your local college does it, and/or ask at the library.  I think that Learndirect also does it if he'd be happier learning on a computer at a local centre, with tutor help on hand.

I would think that tutors of adult literacy would be aware of the possibility of dyslexia so they'd be looking out for it.

Best of luck to your husband anyway, it sounds like a great idea.

  8. I don't know if you've been watching the Channel 4 documentary "Can't Read, Can't Write", but that might give you some inspiration.

    Official website: http://www.channel4.com/health/microsite...

You can watch the second episode here (but not the first as it wasn't broadcast in the last 7 days). Just select the programme title from the drop down box: http://www.channel4.com/watch_online/
