Can someone give me some hints on remembering the difference between many pairs of similar French verbs?

Specifically, I'm having a hard time telling the difference between verbs where r- or re- is added to an existing verb but doesn't give it the simple meaning of merely repeating the action. Sometimes it seems like both words mean the same thing. Examples:

ajouter/rajouter

couvrir/recouvrir

amener/ramener

cueillir/recueillir

assurer/rassurer

s'assurer/se rassurer

assembler/rassembler

trouver/retrouver

Any tips on remembering these, either individually or as a matter of principle?
