I'm looking for any info/ advice about Ft Myers and surrounding areas in FL, such as the best area to search for a place to live to jobs. My Husband will probably be looking for a job in maintenance, construction etc. I feel like i just don't know where to start. We're looking to move in Sept and find jobs when we're there. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

  1. I think you should have a look at the job market around Fort Myers BEFORE you come down. It's crappy right now.

Here's the website for the local newspaper. Click on the JOBS button at the top and do some searching...

You can also check the classifieds in this link for apartments/houses.

  2. Ft. Myers is supposedly one of the MOST EXPENSIVE places to live in Florida... which is a State where EVERYTHING is expensive.

We lived on our boat in the Yacht Basin at St. Pete for a little over 6 years and I saw the cost of living double in that time.

The only thing they can do in Florida is figure out ways to get money from you.  I got to where I refused to put in at Ft. Myers.. I anchored out at the channel bouy because it was too expensive to go into a transient dock.

  3. Fort Myers beach and Fort Myers city are two different areas.  The area is beautiful.  I live in expensive Maryland with high taxes and also have property North of Fort Myers on the west coast.  There are NO state taxes in Florida which helps.  There are plenty of retirement homes that could use a good maintenance man.  The market for building houses isn't too good down there at this time.  You will find many of the homes FOR SALE.  Good luck.  I would suggest looking to buy a home outside of the city.
