Can someone give me some tips on buying a sculling boat?

I'm a beginning rower, and want to learn to scull. I don't want to make a huge investment right away, but I also don't want to buy something that will fall apart or have to be replaced soon. Please give me some advice.

  1. I would recommend buying a used, wood single.  Even though wood boats aren't popular anymore, (especially as racing shells - with good reason), if you are a novice, recreational rower it should suit your needs just fine.  Wood boats are extremely sturdy and last a long time, so you won't need to worry about replacing it until you are ready to invest in a composite shell.  When that time rolls around, you should look into purchasing an Empacher.  Anyway, for now ask around at your local club to see if anyone is selling or try looking into renting one.  Keep in mind, if you buy your own shell, you will also have to pay for storage if you keep it at your club.
