Also I should mention that I understand the beginning part but not the actual jump. Everyone says its a waltz jump with a three turn entrance but that doesn't seem to help.

  1. I think all the answers above are really great!!

Follow those tips and you should be okay, but if you find that you are still struggling:

Try entering the jump from a right/left Mohawk.

I had a really hard time mastering my Salchow. I was over rotating when I went into the 3 turn. My coach thought that I would be better off doing it from a Mohawk. I do a right Mohawk into my jump and I feel like I get more height.

This may not work for you but good luck anyways!!

    I hope I could help!!

  2. The people who said it's a waltz jump with a three turn, are right. Think in your mind "I'm going to go do an over rotated waltz jump." Then just jump high and do a three turn in front of it. I know it's frustrating. But now I find myself flustered sometimes in the double salchow! Don't worry, you'll get it :)

  3. trust me i know the feeling of a stubborn salchow :P but keep practicing and you'll get it!

you can practice the salchow from a standstill.

make sure you lock your arms (for righty's, left arm infront, right arm to the side) and free leg in place in the 3 turn, they shouldnt move at all until you do the jumping part of the jump.

make sure you hold the 3 turn long enough, count out 3 beats before you turn, then 2 after while holding that BI edge.  bend your knee.

once ready scoop your right leg around and up, draw in your arms and spring up off your blade.

dropping your left shoulder down slightly can sometimes help.

land on the RBO edge into landing position.

i hope this helped a little. the main things to remember is the scooping action of the freeleg, locking your arms in place throughout the 3 turn, and holding the back inside edge long enough.

good luck :) once you learn it you'll probably find it really fun, i know i do

  4. I agree with the other girl.

Sometimes using a 3 turn doesn't work. Try using a mohawk instead.

Remember to check your shoulders as well!

  5. Hey!

I had EXACTLY the same problem it just wouldn't work and it really annoyed me! now i have it with loop! lol.

Okay, to start with you need to practise 3 turns. when they are good, push into a 3 turn then do almost a quick three turn and then you feel the toe scraping the ice thats when you *pop* and jump.

To help with the actual jump part, make sure you keep the leg thats free back until the moment you jump, then you swing it through. Keep the hip up, otherwise you will be putting you foot down just before the jump (this is what i did and its a hard habbit to break!)

So in summary heres how do to a salchow.

    1) Push into a 3 turn

    2) Do a tight 3 turn untill your toe catches the ice

    3) As you jump bring you free leg infront

Its hard to explain just in words so here is a video with tips on it :)
