Oh gosh, but as a Mom, I would say to totally IGNORE her...  like keep going and act as though you didn't hear her.  That will make her mad, too.

Depends on the insult, usually ignoring them is the best, they just want a reaction.  

There's no way to win a word war, it either keeps going or escalates.

Someone that get their confidence from insulting people isn't very happy, and it will show eventually.

Or, you can do the up down look, and leave it at "seriously, coming from YOU???"
