I really have a big problem. See, my mom was sitting in her car one morning watching my dad change the oil.. Me and my brother really wanted to get to Walmart fast.

Do you think she should have helped him?

I'm serious!! I have the SAME problem, and I haven't seen this question posted in awhile..lol. Should they share the oil-changes or should my dad let my mom do it herself? My mom's already stressed out... You guys/ladies give such good answers. :-)

  1. I agree.  It's a safety issue, and your dad, and everyone else's dad just needs to do it alone.

Mom isn't at fault here, she probably does her share, and Dad's just being chivalrous.! :)

    Okee..

  2. Well... First thing is first...  Safety... OK...

Noone should be in a car while someone is underneath it. EVER.   well not at home at least.  Its OK in a shop with a pit. but not on any kind of jack system. that is just not good...

the person in the car could rock the car and cause the jack and jack stands to  fail/tip over.

Oil changes are pretty easy stuff.. the hardest thing is disposing of the oil.

Do I think she should have helped him.. well thats more along the lines of a personal question.. If I knew your mother and father then I could make a more informed judgement..

You see.. its possible your dad would rather do it himself for your mom so he can feel more manly... the protector.. the provider.

Its also possible your mother wants to help or to learn something about cars if she doesn't already know anything and is hurt by your father excluding her or not sharing this knowledge.

Repairing something should never be done fast.. this can lead to poor results. sometimes breaking things in the process, or even forgetting things, thus having to do the job over again a 2nd time even.

An oil change is a 1 person job.  having 2 people under the car would just slow it down.    You really only need a screwdriver to remove the old filter.. and an open end wrench to remove and replace the oil pan drain bolt.. so theres no need for a helper to hand tools.

So without knowing your parents... I would say... the best answer is.. to help you and your brother get to walmart faster... no your mother should not help with the oil change to get you there faster.. she should only help with the cleanup of the area and putting away of the tools to expidite the process of completing the oil change the fastest so your needs are met.

  3. No, leave her alone.

  4. Your question makes no sense.

  5. Yea I think your dad should supper vice you and your brother  to change the oil while he sits in the shade drinking a cold one.
