I have spent a very long time looking at this problem. I have asked a lot of people and no one knows the answer or could help me in any way. Can someone please help me?

A plane flies against the wind from Center City to New City at a rate of 220mph. On the

return trip, the plane flies with the wind at a rate of 250mph. The return trip took one

hour less time. How far apart are the two cities? (remember rt =d)

note: rt=d means rate multiplied by time equals distance

  1. 220t=d

    250(t-1)=d

    d=d

    250(t-1)=220t

    250t - 250=220t

    ------------------------

    100

    25t - 25= 22t

    -25t         -25t

    -25=-3t

    ------------

    -3

    t=25/3

    Possibly? Maybe it will atleast jog something in your memory. It's been a long summer and I haven't had to do much algebra. Sorry I couldn't be more certain of my answer. =\
