  1. 2x^4+16x

    (2x^2+4x)(x^2+4)

  2. 2x^4 + 16x

    2x(x^3 +8)

    2x(x+2)(x^2 -2x+4)

    you need to know that a^3 + b^3 = (a+b)(a^2 - ab +b^2)

  3. 2x is the factor common to both terms in your expressio, so

    2x^4 + 16x = 2x (x^3 + 8)

  4. Factor out 2x from each term:

    2x(x^3 + 8)

Factor the second term further to get:

    2x(x + 2)(x^2 - 2x + 4)

    Because x^3 + a^3 = (x + a)(x^2 - ax + a^2), and 8 is 2^3
