ok, so i really don't know much at all about photography, but i know that a lot of people prefer film cameras over digital. so i was thinking about getting a film camera. but i don't know where to start. i know i want really good picture quality and have it be simple to use. what are good cameras to look at? what should i look for in a camera? any input would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

  1. Get a Digital SLR....

All the benefits of a traditional SLR plus the benefits of digital (low/no cost output etc)

The instant feedback allows for a much faster and less expensive learning curve than with a film camera.

(all your camera settings are also embedded into the image - so 6 months later you can easily check what settings you used to get a particular effect - ISO/aperture/focal length etc)

You'll find a lot of professional photographers have moved to digital...in fact regular film has ceased being produced by many companies...it's on the way out (unfortunate but true)

  2. HI Sailor Chick,

I am hearing you about needing to be cost effective.... especially now since things are costing so much money.

You are going to find hundreds of film cameras on eBay.... and you are going save a bunch of money to boot...

Let me go see what they have....

I am seeing 1200 Canon SLR listings:

    http://photography.search.ebay.com/Canon...

1500 listing in the Nikon SLR catagory:

    http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll...

And 900 items listed in Minolta:

    http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll...

You should be able to find something you like from all of those to choose from.  If you would rather.  Look in Craigslist.org in your city...  you can expect to find a good many SLRs in the Canon / Nikon / Minolta line there for sure.

If you go the eBay route and I have bought a number of cameras from sellers on eBay... just watch for their user feedbacks.   You want to see that they have sold many, many items and have a high percentage of happy customers.  Also ask if they have a return policy, just in case.

But as you are looking for a camera... you will get the better deal if it comes as a set with a few lenses (2or 3) and a flash or some other accessories.

If I were looking for an SLR film camera for myself or my daughter,  I would be in the market for the Nikon brand...  not that there is anything wrong with Canon...   but that would be my choice.

If you were in  Texas I could point you in the direction of a number of very nice cameras.  :))

Hope that helps and good luck in your search.

    Thanks for reading.
