The ultimate measure of a man (or woman) is not where he (or she) stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he (or she) stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

  1. I think it means that you shouldn't decide how great or awesome or amazing someone is until you've seen them go through hardships. If they always have what they want and need of course they're always gonna be nice and happy and giving.

But if in times of crisis they are still the same strong, loving, giving people, THEN you'll know they were as amazing as you first thought they were.

  2. What it basically means is that it's easy to stand for something when it's convenient to do so and when others agree with you. But it's difficult to do so when others disagree with your stand and even revile you for it.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was fighting for civil rights in the South at a time when doing so was very dangerous.
