Question:

Can someone help me select a Home Theatre System?

I have been researching new a/v systems for a Samsung TV recently ordered. It seems that the new HDMI v1.3a is the way to go, as it allows the digital audio to be processed through the A/V receiver. Such systems seem expensive. Unfortunately, my budget only allows for a "pass through" of the signal with HDMI and requires a separate connection (i.e. optical cable) to take advantage of the audio. However, I noted that the Samsung actually has an digital optical connection for audio OUT. Since my wife would just assume not mess with anything but the TV when I'm not around anyway - I'm thinking this may be the way to go. My question is - would this configuation (all components including the cable box connected directly to the TV via HDMI and then the receiver hooked up via optical audio out) allow for optimal audio? AND - would I be correct in thinking that when watching cable, the receiver volume would adjust with the cable remote? Your input is appreciated.

  1. Optical cables are nice for 5.1 ,  6.1 and 7.1 Dolby, but TrueHD dolby requires HDMI to process that.....

Are you OUT anything if you don't use TrueHD?  I'm not sure, as I haven't yet seen it on DVDs that I watch...

Maybe it's only on Touchy-feely-girl movies.....

No, the volume is not controlled by the cable remote, unless you program it, and switch the remote to control the amp.....

It will only do the TV's volume in it's present state....

So don't lose the codes for your cable remote.

I have a Denon...I've heard Yamaha and Harmon Kardons too...I prefer the Denon.
