  1. A setting in the novel is the WHERE and the WHEN.

So, as you read each novel/chapter   ask  "Where does this take place?  When does this take place"  and then think about how that affects the story.

    Here is an example:

    The Great Gatsby

Where?  New York, America    When? 1920s

The next step is to ask yourself what was happening in the 20s.

Right after WWI - so there is still much discussion of the first world war, Americans and the rest of the world are still recovering from the aftermath.

There are many economic changes happening in the country -- this can be seen by the different classes that are demonstrated in the novel.

This is just a fraction of what can be said about the novel in relation to the setting.

  2. It's asking: How do the surroundings (ie: location, time, people) effect what happens throughout the novel.

For example, say you were reading a war novel. Well, if the main character's best friend dies in battle, the setting effected the action because they were at war and his friend died!

    Good luck! :)

  3. The setting includes time & place. Write about the locations in the book and the time of year or times of day important events in the story are taking place. It might be a nice touch to list reasons why events would happen differently if the setting was changed. Good luck!
