I have 2 questions that I am stuck and I need some help and information.

1) Identify 5 particular types of food and drink that you consider to be inappropriate to include in a morning tea menu for preschoolers?

2) Outline 10 key things staff need to consider to ensure appropriate hygiene and safety when supervising and interacting with children during morning tea.

I am new to Children Services and I need some information.

Thank You Very Much ....

  1. For the first question I was say:

1 grapes - unless cut in half (choking hazard)

    2. Sausages or  hot dogs  (choking hazard unless cut length-wise - but even then they are still rather unhealthy choice)

    3. Peanutbutter, nuttella etc, - due to severe allergies

    4. Fruit punch, or kool aid- too high in sugar with no nutritional value, look for pure fruit juices instead

    5. anything else high in sugar or with caffeine.

For your second question it would be easier to name some things that you should do:

Each child needed to have their hands washed with soap and water before eating.

The table needed to be disinfected before eating

The Dishes need to be cleaned and disinfected before use.

An adult needs to be watching all the the children at all times - in particular to be sure no one is taking too large of bites that may result in choking, but also to be sure that they are using any cutlery in a safe manner.

Do not allow them to use knives - try to keep it to spoons as there is less potential for injury that way.

Children should be required to sit and eat at a table and not allowed to walk around with food in their mouthes.

All adults must thoroughly wash their hands frequently as well.

Food preparation needs to be according to your government requirements.

    I hope that helps. :)

  2. aren't you supposed to come up with these answers on your own???  do you work for them??  if so that's kinda scary.

  3. Hi, there are lots of foods that are inappropriate for snacks, especailly those high in sugar, eg: biscuits, containing nuts, in case of allergies, fizzy drinks and other things containing too many additives, coffee or tea, because of the caffiene and junk food, generally should be avoided.

Foods to consider for snacks: breadsticks, humous, pitta bread, cucumber and carrot sticks, fruit, cheese sticks, rice cakes, wholemeal bread, milk, water should always be avaliable.

Staff should be aware of any allergies, cultural diets and parents specifications to avoid feeding children any unsuitable food. For instance some children suffer from gluten, dairy, nut and egg allergies which can cause extreme reactions. Muslims and Jews do not eat pork and many Hindus are vegetarian so menus should respect these cultural diets.

The children should be helped to wash their hands prior to eating and the surfaces should be clean. All staff must wash their hands before handling food given to the childen.

Children should be encouraged to help set up the table and pour their own drinks.

Children should be shown and encouraged to use good manners, for instance waiting until their friends are all ready before eating, asking to leave the table, saying please and thankyou, eating carefully and not playing with their food.

The furniture should be appropriate and safe for the children to sit and eat safely.

Staff should sit with the children and talk about the food and drinks to encourage vocabulary and emphasise the importance of healthy eating.

    Hope this helps.
