I have been using for some time now but i can't seem to make sense of it, for example, when i search for someone's name e.g. John Smith born in 1950 and the go to the birth index on the results pages. It gives you the year and the quarter, then it has two names "from" and "to" does anyone know what these are. I would understand if it was a woman who got married and changed her name, but the "from" and "to" names always have the same surname. Confusing i know, but i would be glad if you could help.

  1. Its an index of all the smith's born in that quarter of that year. I think once you have the relevant index number then you have to go to your local records office with the index number to view the relevant info.

As a rule i try to avoid these index's they only cause confusion, i'm lucky where i live we have an online index to trace birth, death & marriage details and we can even email them and ask question about any of our queries.

Genes is a good site, but most of the info you get from that site is via other peoples trees so you have to assume their info is true.

Good luck with your search i've found lots of info on my family some very interesting and some not so.

  2. I'm pretty sure it's alphabetical, instead of "From" A "To" B, it tells you the first surname listed on the page to the last surname on the page - so for instance, "From" Adams" "To" Bell,  or if it is all Adams surnames listed on the page, it would be "From" Adams "To" Adams.

    Hope this makes sense.
