Can someone help me with a word problem (because I am retarded when it comes to algebra II)?

Okay, here ish the word problem:

You want to buy either a paperback or hard covered book. Paperbacks cost $6.95 each and hard covered books cost $24.99 each. Write an expression for the total amount you must spend. Evaluate the expression if 3 of your friends get a paperback.

So wouldn't it be

6.95(3)+24.99x=x...?

That's the only thing I can think of, and I'm pretty sure that's not right... lol.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question... I'm suprised I'm actually in algebra II instead of geometry =P

  1. well idk

  2. The total amount spent = T

    The number of paperback books purchased = P

    The number of hard covered books purchased = H

    Expression:

    6.95P + 24.99H = T

    If three people buy one paperback each, that is 3 total paperbacks. Plug in 3 for P. No one is buying a hard covered book, so plug in 0 for H. Solve for T.

    6.95(3) + 24.99(0) = T

    6.95(3) + 0 = T

    6.95(3) + 0 = T

    20.85 = T

    $20.85 is the total amount owed for three paperbook books.

    Hope that helps!
