A steam catapult launches a jet aircraft from the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, giving it a speed of 205 mi/h in 2.90 s.

  1. a)

    1st velocity = 0

    2nd velocity = 205 * ( 1609/3600 ) = 91.6 m/s

    the average acceliration = the average velocity / time

                                       =( 91.6 - 0 ) / 2.90  = 31.6

    b)

    velocity = ditance / time

    distance = time * velocity

                 = 2.90 * 91.6   = 256.64 m

  2. a) Initial velocity u = 0

    Final velocity v = 205 mi/h = 205 * 1609/3600 m/s = 91.6 m/s

    Time t = 2.90 s

    Average acceleration a = (v-u)/t

    = (91.6 - 0)/2.90 m/s^2

    = 31.59 m/s^2

    b) For constant acceleration,

    average speed = (u + v)/2 = (0 + 91.6)/2 m/s

    = 45.8 m/s

    Distance = average speed * time = 45.8 * 2.90 m

    = 132.82 m
