You didn't give enough info such as caliber, bullet weight, bullet design, etc. However, the .223 would be a good choice for a sniper because the bullet is light, small caliber and flat trajectory. The speed of the .223 Remington is 3100 to 3240 feet per second. The .223 WSSM is around 3850 feet per second. These are muzzle velocities meaning that is the speed when they leave the end of the barrel. They slow down as they travel of course, but can travel up to a mile. Of course they are not accurate to that distance. Some expert marksmen can shoot with accuracy beyond 1000 yards using certain combinations of caliber and loads.
