  1. You have to be a bit more clear, what exactly don't you understand, this pattern is pretty clear.  Is it that you don't understand some of the techniques?  The mitten has a slightly rolled cuff rather than a ribbed cuff.  This is achieved by the purl row following the cast on and then going to stockinette stitch (knit every stitch, every round).  When you get to the gusset, the part where it gets larger for the thumb, you do lifted increases (Make, or M 1) by lifting the strand between the two stitches in the row below and knitting into the back of it.  If this is beyond your skill level you can simply knit into the first and last stitch of the gusset area in the front and back, but the M1 is less visible.  It helps to put markers around these stitches so you remember where they are.  The rest of it is pretty standards mitten instructions, put the thumb stitches on a holder, cast on a couple of stitches over the gap there (knit them on for best results), knit the palm and then do the decrease rounds for the fingertips.  Pick up the thumb stitches and knit the thumb.

While you can learn from a book or on-line, it may be best to have a good 3D teacher at hand.
