when you have a period we release a egg is this the same as ovulation or does ovulation happen at a different time in the cycle,

no silly answers please i would like to clear this up because my gp has got me really confused now.

  1. Ovulation happens before you start bleeding . It is when an egg is released from one of the ovaries .  


  2. Yes, ovulation is when you release the egg, this happens about 14 days before you have your period.

    The period is caused when the egg fails to be fertilized by the male sperm and so does not implant in the lining of the womb.  The period is where the lining then sheds and we bleed.

    If the egg is fertilized it will implant in the lining of the womb and different hormones will be released to stop the lining shedding and so you will miss your period.
